Cybele Forest Lodge Tucked away in the mountain forests near Mpumalanga Reserve, Cybele Forest Lodge is a haven of hospitality and the perfect base from which to explore South Africas bush country.Truly exclusive, this former hunting lodge is open to only 28 guests at a time. Its 12 rooms, suites and cottages all with their own log fireplaces have been individually decorated and some include private walled patios or gardens. The two-storey Paddock suites offer the ultimate in luxury and include a private swimming pool and outdoor shower hidden in the foliage.The main building is an antique-filled old farmhouse whose homey decor and warm colours are in perfect contrast to the vivid flora and fauna outside. With a wide, inviting veranda, it houses the Lodges intimate dining room, much respected for its five-course dinners blending the best of French and English country cuisine.The proximity of Kruger Park and several private game reserves means there are plenty of day trips to choose from (for a real splurge, have the hotel organize one by private helicopter). The Lodge also has its own riding stables, well-stocked trout stream ripe for fishing and of course that veranda, for those who prefer to read or simply contemplate the surrounding gardens. Cottage Xeriscaping meets cottage gardening? It doesn't quite work from a distance, but I love all my plants and can't get rid of any of them, and I keep adding more. The yellowish Ceanothus in the front center has gotten a little out of hand, and has a good haircut in store for it.
